John Barkley to take new role at CHS

Published: Tue. March 9, 2010

Dr. John Barkley, Chief Medical Officer of Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region, has announced that effective March 26, he will be leaving the organization to pursue a new opportunity with Carolinas Healthcare System (CHS).  In a newly created position, John will serve as the Chief Medical Officer of Post Acute Care Services for the 14 counties in North and South Carolina covered by CHS.  This new role will allow John to further advance, as well as advocate for, the great work achieved through superior hospice and palliative care.

John joined HPCCR over 7 years ago and his impact was felt immediately.  He was instrumental in developing the nationally recognized, award winning palliative medicine program, Palliative Medicine Consultants, which provides care for patients in a variety of locations including five hospitals, more than 30 nursing facilities, and two clinic sites. Additionally, John was instrumental in strengthening the relationship between HPCCR and the medical community; specifically enhancing their knowledge of the critical role of hospice in the continuum of excellent patient care.  His vision and energy enabled HPCCR to care for over 11,000 palliative care patients since the program’s inception in late 2002 and has also been an important factor in the growth of the HPCCR hospice program.  Last year, the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and the National Council of Hospice and Palliative Professionals recognized Palliative Medicine Consultants of HPCCR with a National Excellence in Teamwork award for their innovative work.

The entire staff of HPCCR will miss John, but wish him the very best in his new role.
