A Thirty Year History
1978
- The organization is incorporated as a not-for-profit called Hospice at Charlotte in March.
1984-1986
- Hospice at Charlotte becomes the first hospice in the Carolinas certified to offer the new Hospice Medicare Benefit.
- Hospice at Charlotte is the first hospice in the Carolinas to care for AIDS patients. The organization’s growth leads to the purchase of an office at 1331 The Plaza.
1988-1990
- Hospice at Charlotte becomes JCAHO (Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations) accredited.
- Specialized children’s services, such as Chameleon's Journey, are initiated.
- Growth leads to a second capital campaign and the purchase of a new office location at 1420 East Seventh Street.
1993-1999
- The Hospice Alternative Residence Team (HART) is created to serve patients in extended care facilities.
- Service area is expanded to eight additional counties.
- Hospice of Lincoln County merges with Hospice at Charlotte to form NewSouth HealthCare.
- A branch office is opened at Lake Norman.
2000-2002
- The Mecklenburg End of Life Care Coalition is established.
- The organization enters a formal agreement for end-of-life research with UNC Charlotte College of Health and Human Services.
- A full time Medical Director is hired.
2003 - 2005
- The organization celebrates its Silver Anniversary.
- A Certificate of Need is obtained to build a free standing 16-bed hospice inpatient and residential facility.
- The organization adopts a new corporate name, Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region. Branch offices in Lincoln County and Lake Norman become Hospice & Palliative Care Lincoln County and Hospice & Palliative Care Lake Norman to reflect the ability to provide palliative care in those offices.
- Leadership Charlotte names HPCCR as winner of the 2004 Community Service Award.
- The Charlotte Business Journal recognizes HPCCR as one of the Best Places to Work for Employee Retention.
- HPCCR is named the recipient of the NC Outstanding Volunteer Program Award.
- A capital campaign is initiated for the Levine & Dickson Hospice House.
- HPCCR achieves ACHC Accreditation and Jewish Hospice Accreditation.
- Palliative Medicine Consultants is established to serve patients with advanced or life limiting illness.
- HPCCR enters into a formal collaboration with Carolinas Healthcare System to provide palliative care.
- A Medical Services Division is established which includes a team of physicians and nurse practitioners.
- Program growth leads to the purchase of the South Charlotte Office, our fourth regional location.
- A public ground breaking initiates construction of Levine & Dickson Hospice House.
2007 - present
- The organization surpasses the $10 million capital campaign goal to build Levine & Dickson Hospice House.
- Construction of Levine & Dickson Hospice House is completed.
- Total daily census exceeds 900, with 500 hospice patients and over 400 palliative medicine patients.
- Palliative Medicine Services are extended to additional counties.
- Levine & Dickson Hospice House officially opens its doors and accepts its first patient.
- The organization launches a specialized program addressing specific needs of patients with Alzheimer's disease and othe forms of dementia. Three grants totaling more than $28,000 funded the start-up costs for this program.
- The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and the National Council of Hospice and Palliative Professionals recognizes our Palliative Medicine Consultants with a National Excellence in Teamwork award for their innovative work.
